Got serious about refinishing our stairs and main floor after years of putting it off. The carpet on the stairs was hiding actual wood treads that we wanted exposed, and the hardwood downstairs had gone dull and scratched in the high traffic spots. Got three quotes total. These guys weren't the lowest bid but the estimator actually walked through what they'd do, what to expect with the dust, how long we'd be out of those areas. That was the level of detail I wanted before signing anything. Scheduling took about two weeks which was fine. Once they started, the carpet came off the stairs and the treads underneath were in better shape than expected, just needed sanding and stain. They did the floor at the same time, kept the dust contained way better than I thought they could. About four days start to finish including dry time. The whole house feels lighter and brighter now that the wood is exposed.

We had a few problems going on at once. The hardwood in the living room had some water damage near a window where the seal had failed years ago, and the staircase leading upstairs had a couple treads that flexed when you stepped on them. I wasn't sure if the floor would need full replacement or if it could be saved, but the guy who came out walked me through both options and said he thought they could repair the damaged section by replacing just those boards and blending the stain. That's what we ended up doing and it looks like nothing ever happened there. For the stairs, they pulled up the loose treads, found that the stringers needed some reinforcement, and put it all back together solid. The repair work cost a lot less than I was bracing for since they didn't push for replacement when it wasn't needed.
